Casting The Circle
The purpose of casting a circle is to create a safe, sacred space between the world of the ordinary (or mundane), and the world beyond he veil. This is the place where magic begins, where spirits ofthe dead and unborn cavort, as well as the world where magical beings such as the faery kin, and others reside.
We cast the circle prevent any negative energy, spirits, or other nasty little entities who want to meddle in your magickal workings, from being able to enter it. It is important that you take this seriously those negative energies or beings, can if allowed in disrupt your spells, cause them to generate an effect that is contrary to your intentions, and even take up permanent residence as an attachment to the grove, or home in which the circle is cast, and sometimes as a permanent and not so beneficial sidekick of one or more members of the magical working. Spiritual self defense is paramount whenever magical energy is being raised and the veil is intentionally thinned. The consequences of carelessness can range from benign inconveniences to generational afflictions (curses).
The key to creating a strong circle is the personal power of those who participate in the casting. To the greatest extent possible visualization should engage as many senses as fully as possible. It is good if you can train yourself to actually see the circle. When cast, it is not just a round space on the floor, but more like a bubble that rises high above you and below you enveloping from all angles.
While some books say a circle must be 9 feet round, the why of that recommendation is elided. One may surmise that the number 9 carries significance For example in Feng Shui the number 9 represents wholeness, and when casting a circle that is exactly what is desired, a whole and complete barrier of protection. With a little creativity you might see fit to devise your own unit standard of distance and for example cast the cirle 9 hands or 9 cubits in diameter so as to weave in the sigificance of that number. Nevertheless the circle should be large enough to contain the altar, magickal supplies, and ebable the paricipants to walk around without hitting the edge. When indoors it is often good to make the entire room into a circle.
Do not be surprised if you sense someone watching you from the outside of the circle. You have created a sphere of energy that hangs halfway between the physical and spiritual worlds, and any spiritual beings who happen to be passing by may be drawn to your circle, mostly out of curiosity. There is no need to be afraid of this. They cannot come within your circle. Most of them will just watch for a few moments, then leave. Do not be afraid, ordinarily they mean you no harm.
To the beginner Circle Casting may seem like an unnecessarily complex ritual. They may feel that there are so many variations to this aspect of ritual that there can’t be any real significance to the practice. Circle casting is an intentionally complex ritual. The reason for this is to get he casters’ subconsious, and consious minds in the proper state, in order to perform what ever spell or ritual is going to be performed.
Consider what might happen if you just walk up to your altar, dirty, in the clothing you wore to work, possibly carrying negative energies you picked up from other people, light a few candles and read something, do you really think it would amount to anything? Of course not! You aren’t putting any effort into it. And your effort is the most important thing in any spell or ritual. It is most important especially when it comes to beginners, who are new to all of this. Who haven’t yet felt the cone of power one builds in their magickal circle, or the fact that after a while, one can literally feel if they get too close to the end of the circle. All of these actions add power and substance to the working, so you would be ill advised to try to cut corners or rush through the process. Once you have cast circles enough times, it won’t feel like so much to do. You will get used to it, as well as the feelings and energies you feel within yourself and your circle.
